Abstract

Title:The Role of Women in the Development of the Saxophone and its Literature
Abstract:
This master’s thesis examines the role of women in the development of the saxophone and its repertoire from the 19th century to the present. It focuses on the broader social context in which women, despite various limitations, gradually became involved in musical education, performance, and public cultural life, particularly through conservatories and other institutions. The thesis analyzes women as educators, soloists, founders of musical organizations, and composers, highlighting their contributions to saxophone pedagogy and literature. Key figures are presented who, through their artistic, pedagogical, and organizational activities, influenced repertoire expansion, commissioning of new works, and the saxophone’s establishment in concert practice. The study also addresses the uneven representation of women in historical sources, which often led to their contributions being overlooked. Nevertheless, the analysis shows that women have significantly contributed to the development of performance practices, pedagogical approaches, and literature, helping to establish the saxophone as both a concert and educational instrument.
