Abstract

Title:Do the material conditions of school sports facilities in Ljubljana meet the needs of students?
Abstract:
The quality of physical education (PE) also depends on adequate material conditions. Therefore, this study assessed the state of sports halls, outdoor sports areas, and sports equipment in primary schools (PS) in Ljubljana. Data were obtained through the analysis of public databases and schools’ documents, as well as interviews with PE teachers and two officials from the Sports Department of the Municipality of Ljubljana (MOL). We found that the number of available training units does not meet the number of classes, leading to space constraints. Teachers report that sports halls are worn out, making the conditions for conducting PE inadequate. The state of sports equipment and outdoor sports fields is better compared to sports halls. The biggest differences in material conditions are observed among medium-sized PS (PS with 21–27 classes and those with 28–35 classes), where conditions are the poorest, and smaller PS (PS with 17–20 classes), where conditions are the most favorable. The majority of PS sports halls in Ljubljana require an upgrade. MOL, as the founder of PS, should organize renovations or new construction of sports facilities, where it has not yet been planned, to ensure that the sports infrastructure meets the needs of the students.
