Abstract

Title:The obligation of sustainability in hosting major sporting events : a case study of the women's European Handball Championship 2022
Abstract:
This study explores the sustainability aspects of organizing major sporting events, using the 2022 Women’s European Handball Championship (EHF Euro 2022) as a case study. The analysis evaluates the integration of sustainability goals into the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the event, as well as the effectiveness of the measures adopted across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. The findings indicate that EHF Euro 2022 was one of the first major sporting events in Slovenia to be guided by a defined sustainability framework, with concrete measures successfully implemented in areas such as mobility, waste management, food and beverages, energy efficiency, and community engagement. Despite logistical and time-related challenges, the event significantly contributed to the development of good practices in the sustainable organization of sporting events. The research applies a mixed-method approach, combining case study analysis with systematic monitoring by the authors. The study primarily draws on the conclusions presented in the Sustainable Sports Event handbook (Pavli, 2023). This article contributes to a broader understanding of the importance of a holistic sustainability approach in sports event management and provides guidelines for future organizers. While limitations such as time pressures, logistical difficulties, and the absence of certain systemic tools remain, the event offers a solid foundation for advancing sustainable practices in the organization of large-scale sporting events in Slovenia.
