Abstract

Title:When you forget, remember me: Memory, loss and humour in the context of Alzheimer's disease
Abstract:
The central focus of my master's thesis is to delve into the boundaries of illustration and its role in addressing complex topics, such as Alzheimer’s disease. I draw inspiration from personal experience with my late grandfather, exploring themes of memory, loss, and humor as a coping mechanism. The practical part of the MA thesis consists of three elements in different mediums. These elements include an illustrated book that weaves together personal experiences, humor, and visual storytelling, along with other creative approaches that symbolically and interactively address the process of memory decay and possibilities for its preservation. Together, they form a comprehensive exploration of the connections between visual communication, memory, and coping with life’s challenges. The theoretical part delves into the complexity of Alzheimer’s disease, exploring its effects and techniques for slowing its progression. The thesis also analyzes the limitations of illustration as a medium and its capacity to intertwine humor with profound existential questions. It emphasizes the importance of innovative illustration techniques that go beyond traditional formats, encouraging reflection on the essence of memory and identity.
