The master's thesis addresses the development of an online store for handmade products using the method of design thinking. The aim of the research was to develop a functional, user-friendly, and visually appealing online store that would enable a sole entrepreneur to effectively present and sell handmade knitted and crocheted products, while also allowing simple content management. At the same time, the study examined whether a user-centered approach could be used to develop an online store that provides a high-quality user experience and meets the needs of the target group.
The research was based on the design thinking method, which includes the phases of empathy, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing. In the empirical part of the study, a competitor analysis was conducted, including five Slovenian and five foreign online stores. The analysis covered visual, technical, user, and content aspects and was complemented by a SWOT analysis. A survey was conducted to identify the needs and purchasing habits of potential users. Based on the results of the analysis and the survey, guidelines for the development of a new online store were established.
During the prototyping phase, the information architecture and wireframe system were designed, defining the structure of the website and the arrangement of its content. Based on the prepared plans, the defined color palette, and typography, a functional online store was developed using the WordPress content management system and the WooCommerce plugin. The user experience was evaluated using the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire and tested with the UXtweak tool.
The results of the research showed that users pay the most attention to clear product descriptions, high-quality photographs, a well-structured website layout, and a simple purchasing process when shopping online. Testing of the developed online store demonstrated a high level of usability and easy navigation. The study found that the design thinking method represents an effective tool for developing user-centered digital solutions and enables the systematic development of functional online stores. The research confirmed that, by using a systematic approach and accessible technologies, it is possible to develop a functional online store that meets the needs of both the client and the end users.
