Abstract

Title:Analysis of wildland-urban interface areas in Slovenia
Abstract:
This master’s thesis examines the interface zones between the wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas as key areas of fire vulnerability in urban spaces in Slovenia. Using a selected methodology and GIS tools, a spatial analysis was conducted, resulting in the creation of a raster layer of WUI areas with a 10-meter spatial resolution at the national level. The analysis also includes the calculation of selected spatial indicators at the level of Slovenian statistical regions and local communities. The results show that, in terms of the proportion of WUI areas, the Posavje statistical region is the most vulnerable. Together, WUI areas cover a good 17% of the country’s total area, where more than half of the population lives. In the selected local communities, an average of 37% of vulnerable undeveloped building land was identified, which simultaneously represent an opportunity for development and a threat to a larger portion of the population in the event of development. We also note the significant importance of systemic disorder in areas of overgrowth or transitional land-use zones, which represent a characteristic source of fuel for fire spread. Based on the results, general guidelines for spatial planning were developed with the aim of reducing fire risk at multiple levels of management.
