this master’s thesis, we explore bioart in Slovenia as a specific field of
contemporary art at the intersection of art, science, and technology. In the introductory section,
we define the concept of bioart and present its terminological, methodological, and historical
framework, focusing on the relationship between art and living media. We then analyze the
development of bioart in Slovenia through key institutions, exhibitions and festivals that have
facilitated its emergence and production. The central part of the thesis is devoted to an
examination of key Slovenian bioartists (Špela Petrič, Saša Spačal, Maja Smrekar, Robertina
Šebjanič, and Polona Tratnik) and their practices, which we interpret as part of a coherent
spatio-temporal constellation. In conclusion, we highlight the continuity of these practices
among the younger generation of artists and demonstrate that bioart represents an important
segment of 21st-century Slovenian contemporary art.
