Abstract

Title:The path ahead : factors, perceptions, and influences in ninth-graders‘ high school selection
Abstract:
In this study, we analyzed the factors influencing decision for high school and examined the attitudes of ninth-grade students toward different types of high schools. The sample included 198 ninth-graders from the Gorenjska, Podravska, Osrednjeslovenska, and Posavska regions. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis, we found that academic performance in the eighth grade significantly affects the choice between general (gymnasium) and vocational high schools. The most common factors for choosing a gymnasium were solid preparation for further education, the quality of teaching, and the influence of parents, siblings, and friends. Conversely, interest in a specific field of work was the main reason for enrolling in vocational high schools, as reported by 80% of students in this group. We also found that students aiming for vocational schools have a clearer idea of their future careers compared to those choosing gymnasiums. The results showed that the perception of different types of high schools varies depending on students’ preferred choices of high school. The study emphasizes the importance of career counseling, focusing on exploring students‘ interests and uncovering new areas of curiosity. We believe that the findings of this research will be valuable to school counselors in gaining a better understanding of the factors influencing ninth-graders‘ decision-making processes.
