Nightlife at Metelkova plays an important yet conditional role in personal and social transformation, as rave temporarily loosens social structures and enables experiences of communitas. These moments of safety, togetherness, and bodily attunement arise through the temporary suspension of hierarchies, as also confirmed by the empirical material. At the same time, nightlife can reproduce social inequalities, which largely depends on the principles by which events are organized. Repressive measures by the Municipality of Ljubljana reduce Metelkova’s autonomy and thus its potential for social change, making the club scene one of the few remaining spaces where alternative forms of sociality can still emerge. Metelkova therefore functions as a microcosm in which care practices, responses to violence, and different modes of communal coexistence are actively tested.
