Abstract
The master's thesis focuses on the transformation of open public spaces in the city center of Sarajevo. This area has evolved through various historical periods, including the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, socialist, and post-war reconstructions, resulting in a complex and layered urban structure. The thesis analyzes the current spatial challenges in the city center and establishes a strategic framework for the comprehensive renovation of these open public spaces. Key challenges identified include the dominance of motorized traffic, inadequate infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, limited opportunities for expanding green spaces, and poorly defined functions and designs of the public areas. These issues create significant social and environmental burdens that negatively impact the quality of life in the city center. To address these challenges, the methodological approach combines historical analysis, field research, spatial mapping, expert interviews, case studies, and a review of relevant literature. It also includes a plan for restructuring the open public spaces in the city center. Comparative studies from Ljubljana, Vienna, and Barcelona provide examples of best practices that were critically evaluated and adapted to fit the specific spatial, social, and cultural context of Sarajevo. Based on an examination of selected urban theories, six key factors essential for the successful transformation of the open public spaces were identified: safety, accessibility, inclusion, diversity, resilience, and sustainability. The thesis proposes a renovation plan for the open public spaces in the center of Sarajevo that prioritizes people over motorized traffic. This work demonstrates that systematically improving the quality of open public spaces can strengthen local identity and enhance the sustainability and resilience of the city center in response to contemporary environmental and social challenges.

Title:PREDLOG PRENOVE ODPRTIH POVRŠIN V MESTNEM SREDIŠČU SARAJEVA
Abstract:
Magistrsko delo obravnava preoblikovanje odprtega javnega prostora v središču mesta Sarajevo. To so varnost, dostopnost, vključenost, raznolikost, odpornost in trajnost.
