This master's thesis focuses on the analysis of defensive players’ performance in the 6:0 zone defense system in handball. The main aim of the study was to identify the characteristics of modern implementation of this defensive system and to determine the key tactical elements that influence its effectiveness at the highest competitive level. In the theoretical part, based on domestic and international scientific and professional literature, the structure of handball, defensive systems, and the fundamental principles of the 6:0 defense were presented.
The empirical part of the study is based on a qualitative video analysis of matches played by the top four national teams at the EHF EURO 2026. The analysis was conducted using match recordings available on the EHFTV platform. Special attention was given to defensive actions, cooperation between defenders, and their responses to various offensive situations.
The results show that the 6:0 defense in modern handball is performed in a significantly more dynamic and aggressive manner compared to the past. The key factors of defensive success include timely pressure on the ball carrier, effective cooperation between adjacent defenders, clear communication, and the ability to anticipate offensive actions. It was also found that teams frequently adapt the basic 6:0 formation into more offensive variations in order to reduce attacking space and increase the likelihood of ball recovery.
The findings contribute to a better understanding of contemporary tactical characteristics of the 6:0 defense and provide useful insights for coaches and players in planning and implementing defensive training.
