Abstract

Title:
The Slovenian police's approach to the issue of fake news
Abstract:
Fake news is considered a potential threat to the functioning and reputation of various organizations, which is why it is also addressed by public relations professionals. Particularly concerning are forms of fake news characterized by malicious intent. Malicious actors use them to sow unrest, hatred, and other negative influences in society. Such content may also be directed at organizations. The Slovenian police stand at the intersection of both aspects of this phenomenon – they can become a target of fake news, and as a security institution they must also address its impact on public safety. This raises the question of how the police approach this issue within the context of public relations. In my master’s thesis, I therefore examined what proportion of police press releases published between 2023 and 2024 addressed information that the institution identified as a form of fake news. I was also interested in identifying which types of fake news could be found in these releases. My research was based on Wardle’s (2017) typology and the conceptual framework of information disorder (Wardle and Derakhshan, 2017). The results showed that the police addressed information that could be classified as fake news in just under five percent of the analyzed press releases. The findings further indicate that most of the cases within this dataset correspond to the category of disinformation, with the predominant subcategory being imposter content.
