Abstract

Title:Understanding diversity in adult education : the key to empowering varied groups
Abstract:
Findings from previous research have shown that participation in education is not evenly distributed. There-fore, based on the latest data from the Adult Education and Learning Survey (AELS), we examined which groups have the most and the least access to educational opportunities. In 2022, adult participation in formal and non-formal education in Slovenia was lower than in 2016. At the same time, the country exceeded the EU average in informal learning. Using a clustering method, we identified three groups of adults that differ in terms of employment status, age, education, and income. We found that the motivations for learning were similar across all groups, while the reasons for non-participation in organised educational activities varied. Among unemployed people, the main reason for nonparticipation was financial, indicating unequal opportunities for empowerment and the need for more effective organisational and systemic measures.
