Abstract
V Republiki Severni Makedoniji so množične migracije in izseljevanje prebivalstva pomemben dejavnik. Cilji magistrske naloge so razumeti potrebe starejših oseb in s pomočjo arhitekturnih intervencij izboljšati kakovost njihovega življenja. Kako lahko arhitektura prispeva k ustvarjanju trajnostnih rešitev in ponudi boljše življenjske pogoje starejšim osebam v Severni Makedoniji?

Abstract:
Aging is a natural process that can be viewed from both biological and chronological perspectives. Today, the world is facing a massive aging of the population, which brings numerous challenges in the fields of medicine, economics, social interaction, and the quality of life of older adults. Although life expectancy has increased by ten years, this also leads to new life difficulties. How can social inclusion contribute to integrating older adults into everyday life, and how do they adapt to the changes brought by aging? In the Republic of North Macedonia, large-scale migration and emigration are significant factors. The outflow of young people has resulted in a predominance of the older population. Consequently, many of those who emigrated return to their homeland in their “later years.” Upon return, they often compare the conditions they experienced abroad with those they find back home. Is North Macedonia capable of providing a better life for the elderly who return? Currently, there are only four public institutions for elderly care operating in North Macedonia, with a total capacity of approximately 600 beds—an insufficient number given the actual needs of the population. There is a pressing need for new care homes, day centers, and intergenerational facilities. Can North Macedonia offer a quality standard of living for its elderly population that aligns with European standards? The aim of this master’s thesis is to understand the needs of older adults and to use architectural interventions to improve their quality of life. How can architecture contribute to creating sustainable solutions and offer better living conditions for elderly people in North Macedonia?
