Abstract

Title:The effect of heavy metals on the growth of common liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha subsp. ruderalis)
Abstract:
Growth and vegetative reproduction of the common liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha subsp. ruderalis, was assessed in soil with varying degrees of heavy metal contamination. We also examined whether there were differences in growth among plants collected from different locations in Slovenia and the growth success of male and female plants. Plants (both male and female) were collected from four cities in Slovenia, at a total of eight sites, and were multiplied from gemmae in the lab. Heavy metal-contaminated soil was collected from the Žerjav area, while uncontaminated soil was collected from Jezersko. Soil mixtures were also prepared to achieve a gradient in metal concentrations. Plants were grown in four treatments for 35 days. We found that plants grew best on uncontaminated soil. Plants on contaminated soil and in a mixture containing a higher proportion of Žerjav soil grew the worst. Plants that grew on a mixture of contaminated and uncontaminated soil with a smaller proportion of Žerjav soil showed an intermediate level of growth. Plants that grew on uncontaminated soil developed the largest number of gemmae cups, while plants on contaminated soil developed the fewest. Plants that grew on a mixture of contaminated and uncontaminated soil showed an intermediate level of gemmae cup development. We also observed intraspecific variability, as plants collected in Maribor grew best. Surprisingly, female plants performed better than male plants on contaminated substrates. Female plants also performed better than male plants across different substrates. Results indicate M. polymorpha subsp. ruderalis is sensitive to increasing concentrations of metals in the soil.
