Abstract

Title:Karst 2022 - the largest wildfire in independent Slovenia
Abstract:
The 2022 Karst fire shocked the Slovenian public and caused more than 20 million in material damage. It covered thousands of hectares, destroying metric tons of unique Karst biomass. It was a catastrophic fire of unique proportions. The purpose of this thesis was therefore to consider and analyze the spread of this fire and the reasons for its increased size. I used the analysis of forest fire manuals, manuals on burning itself, and reports from the Slovenian Firefighters' Association on the fire in question, as well as the report and analysis of the fire prepared by the head of the intervention, Simon Vendramin. I concluded that there were several factors for the extent and intensity of the fire, but two were particularly essential. First of all, there were natural factors, i.e., the dry period, high temperatures, low humidity, and highly flammable biomass. An important factor was also man, or his lack of maintenance of the forest and fire sections. I showed why this fire was able to spread so quickly and why it was so intense and destructive.
