The paper aims to clarify the notions of »literary language« as it is used in Slovene monolingual dictionaries, and »standard language« described in sociolinguistic terms or more narrowly within the theory of language planning. The difference between the two notions is dealt with in the context of the extensive social changes since the time when the theory of literary language was introduced in Slovene linguistics, the development of information-communication technologies in recent decades and the related changes in language use and the needs of the Slovene speaking community.
