Abstract
TiAl(V)N coatings with increasing V content were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering in both monolithic and multilayer (TiAlN/TiAl(V)N) architectures to assess the effect of V impact and film architecture on mechanical, oxidation, and tribological behaviour. Monolithic and multilayer coatings showed similar morphology regardless of the V concentration and the coating architecture. The oxidation resistance of the multilayer coatings is better than that of the monolithic coatings since, in the former case, the presence of the TiAlN layers allows the formation of a more protective oxide layer, rich in Al▫$_{2}$▫O▫$_{3}$▫. Similarly, the multilayer configuration enhanced the tribological performance of the coatings, showing a progressive reduction in friction and greater wear resistance compared to both the reference and corresponding monolithic coatings, particularly at elevated temperatures.
