In our master's thesis, we researched the modernist architecture of the city of Velenje and used it as the basis for wallpaper design.
The aim of the thesis was to explore the cultural heritage of modernist architecture in Velenje and to translate its architectural elements into the context of graphic patterns. The goal of the design was to create wallpaper that would not only be decorative, but would also convey and interpret a specific cultural heritage.
The objectives of the master's thesis were to present the theoretical foundations of ornament, patterns, and modernism, to examine the historical and urban development of modernist Velenje, and to explore modernist and contemporary interpretations of wallpaper, based on theoretical foundations and fieldwork (photography) we analysed key modernist buildings in Velenje and, based on this analysis, to design a series of original wallpapers.
The design process involved photographing 18 key buildings in Velenje, followed by digital and analogue cutting and pasting of photographs and the creation of patterns using the photomontage technique.
Our findings confirmed that architectural elements and textures of modernist architecture can be successfully transformed into contemporary patterns that carry local meaning and promote cultural heritage.
