This master’s thesis examines the impact of using icons on the user experience within an educational user interface. The purpose of the study was to determine whether adding icons to textual labels improves efficiency, comprehensibility, and intuitiveness of use in comparison with an interface that relies solely on text. The study investigated whether icons contribute to faster task completion, a reduction in errors, and higher user satisfaction.
As part of the master’s thesis, an educational user interface was designed in two versions: the first version contained only textual labels, while the second combined icons with text, enabling a comparative analysis of the influence of icons on the user experience. By testing both interface versions, it was possible to comprehensively assess efficiency, task completion time, success rate, and the directness of interactions, as well as the subjectively perceived usability from the perspective of user satisfaction.
The results showed that task-solving performance in the interface with icons was higher than in the text-only version. Users completed tasks more quickly, with fewer incorrect clicks, and with greater directness of interaction. The subjective usability ratings were likewise higher for the interface with icons, as confirmed by the results of the system usability evaluation questionnaire.
It was established that icons significantly contributed to better orientation, greater clarity, and quicker recognition of functions. The findings confirmed all three hypotheses and demonstrated that visual support in the form of icons enhances efficiency, learnability, and user satisfaction in educational user interfaces.
