Abstract

TITLE: Graduations at the University of Graz during Charles VI’s reign (1711–1740) : quantitative and qualitative approaches to webs of relationships in Carinthia, Carniola and Styria / ABSTRACT: While research on the University of Graz student registers in its Jesuit era is well established, analysis of graduation data still is in its infancy. Taking Alojz Cindrič’s valuable survey of Carniolan students and graduates from 1586 to 1773 as a starting point, the present study focuses on graduates from Carinthia, Carniola and Styria in the years of Charles VI’s rule. In this timespan the university became increasingly confronted with state plans and guidance aimed at educating administrative, clerical, intellectual and social elites, which needs to be seen in an early Enlightenment context. After giving a concise description of the lists of graduates, the paper critically discusses problems analysing place names as well as information on class distinctions and then provides data on students’ regional and class origins broken down by the traditional hierarchical degrees (bachelor and master, or respectively doctor of philosophy; bachelor and doctor of theology). Information on the theologians’ affiliations in regional and hierarchical terms, which they had to disclose at the highest level of the doctorate as proof of the obligatory practice they had to perform, provide a rare insight into early clerical careers at the time of graduation. This data eventually also highlights how Carinthia, Carniola and Styria profited from the graduates’ erudition, as Cindrič has already suggested in the Carniolan case. / KEYWORDS: Carinthia, Carniola, Styria, University of Graz, Early Enlightenment, clergy, graduation, Jesuits

Title:Promocije na Univerzi v Gradcu v času vladavine Karla VI. (1711–1740) : kvantitativni in kvalitativni pristopi k mrežam odnosov na Koroškem, Kranjskem in Štajerskem
