Abstract

Title:The earthquake preparedness of the residents of Ljubljana
Abstract:
An earthquake in Ljubljana could cause considerable property damage, injuries and even loss of life. In order to mitigate the consequences of an earthquake, it is important that residents are adequately informed and trained. The aim of the study was to (1) determine the preparedness of the residents of Ljubljana Municipality to respond to a destructive earthquake and (2) determine their interest in receiving additional training on disaster response. The research was based on a literature review, a specially designed questionnaire, and a statistical analysis of the collected data. The results indicate that most respondents are familiar with the basic rules of behaviour during and after an earthquake, such as avoiding lifts, recognizing the dangers of falling objects (e.g. chimneys) and knowing how to get help if trapped under debris. They are aware of the importance of having essential supplies in the home (water, food, medicine and toiletries). The vast majority of the respondents recognized that earthquake-resistant construction is an important measure to mitigate the effects of earthquakes. They also expressed a strong interest in receiving additional training on how to behave in emergencies. The study also revealed differing opinions on the possibility of earthquake forecasting. Ljubljana residents have a clear interest in disaster preparedness content, and they are willing to dedicate some of their free time to acquiring or improving these skills – especially through lectures and practical exercises. This represents an important opportunity for planners and providers of training and prevention programmes, as targeted and interactive approaches can significantly contribute to greater preparedness and resilience of the local community when faced with earthquake hazards.
