Abstract

Abstract:
In 2006 a hurricane blew down 125 hectares of even-aged Norway spruce-dominated forest stands on the Jelovica plateau (FMU Jelovica, FMR Bled). Study should examine: 1) the efficiency of the natural regeneration on the blowdown area and 2) the influence of selected site and forest stand factors on the occurence and abundance of tree species regeneration (dbh < 10 cm). The grid (100 * 200 m) of 81 permanent sampling plots (4 * 4 m) was established, on which some site and stand parameters were evaluated and number, composition and height structure of the regeneration were analysed. The occurence of the regeneration was studied by binary logistic regression, while the abundance of the regeneration was examined using generalized linear model. 30 % of the plots were registered with no regeneration. The average regeneration density was 7,955 trees per hectare with Norway spruce representing 76 %. Several site and forest stand factors significantly influenced the occurence and abundance of the regeneration, however the influences of the same predictors differed between the models for different tree species regeneration. Among site characteristics, the amount of leaf-litterfall and cover of herbaceous and shrub layers had the most significant positive impacts on both the occurence and abundance of the regeneration of all tree species. Among forest stand characteristics, the distance to the nearest forest stand patch had the largest negative influence on the abundance of the regeneration, while the proportion of broadleaves had negative influence on the occurence and abundance of the regeneration.
