Abstract

Title:Adapting Museum Content for Easy-to-Read Audiences
Abstract:
As the ground literacy, reading literacy is a big part of the cognitive ability of a modern person. The development of reading literacy is based on the people, values, standards and other factors that surround them, which make up the reading culture. The importance of reading is grand to all people in society, so the adjustments for those with reading obstacles are important. Easy-to-read texts are a way to achieve an equal inclusion for all. Easy-to-read texts are made up of short sentences, which include simple words that enable easier and quicker reading and understanding for those who need it. These texts can help people with reading obstacles, as well as people and children who are learning to read. It is important to use certain rules when translating texts to easy-to-read. In the empirical part of this thesis, the texts from the museum of forestry and woodworking Vrbovec are translated according to these rules. Because of the font, base, and choice of words, the current texts don't allow easy and quick reading. I noticed a need for change while giving tours of the museum to children, so the research on understanding was conducted with them. The results showed the accuracy of most easy-to-read texts. The research also proved the clarity of these texts for children who are learning to read. New easy-to-read texts next to the exhibits contribute to the clarity of the museum's content, thereby enabling easier access to the information for the general public. Such texts attract people who have troubles with regular fonts and writing quicker and help them understand what they had read.
