The master’s thesis entitled “Revitalization of a Degraded Industrial Area: The Case of Ružićeva and Vodovodna Street in Rijeka” was prepared under the supervision of assoc.prof.dr. Juvančič and co-supervisor asist. Valiner Sluga. The aim of the thesis is to develop a comprehensive concept for the revitalization of the area, integrating spatial, programmatic, and mobility aspects, and grounded in the principles of sustainable renewal, cultural heritage preservation, and participatory design. The proposed approaches combine strategic, physical, infrastructural, and programmatic interventions with smaller, tactically positioned actions and new solutions for improved mobility. The thesis is structured as a comprehensive research and design project, encompassing the theoretical and analytical sections, a presentation of reference cases, and the strategic-conceptual and project components. The theoretical section defines the key concepts and notions necessary for understanding the issues of urban revitalization and industrial heritage in cities, together with the historical and contemporary identity of Rijeka and the Školjić area. In the analytical section, the study area is examined through various spatial and programmatic analyses. The strategic-conceptual section presents the vision for the revitalization of the area through three interconnected strategic objectives and a concept that translates the proposed strategy into comprehensive urban planning. Finally, the project section introduces the urban design proposal, consisting of several project locations. Each of these locations addresses specific spatial challenges, and together they form an integrated renewal strategy that links the historical and existing spatial characteristics of Školjić with new programmatic and functional elements.
