Abstract

Title:
Conceptual Design of Suburban Densification as a Model for City Development:The Case of Vojvoda Vaso Bracanov Street in Podgorica
Abstract:
The project addresses the urban and architectural articulation of Vojvode Vasa Bracanova Street in Podgorica and its associated amenities, with the goal of densifying the city’s peripheral zone. The question of developing any urban environment simultaneously raises issues of construction, deconstruction, preservation of the old, and the emergence of the new. The project focuses on finding ways to engage with the legacy of anonymous suburban architecture that has developed over the past 30 years, as well as with the lifestyle characteristic of the Mediterranean suburb. The idea of densifying the area of the studied street begins with the relocation of the entrepreneurial infrastructure of the “Ivanović” Car Scrap Yard, situated at the entrance of the area in question. Over the past thirty years, this site has transformed from a point of development into a recognizable agent of spatial degradation due to its basic materials and resources. By relocating the scrap yard to a nearby parcel, in the form of a newly constructed workshop dedicated to the processing of discarded car parts, space is freed for the establishment of civil functions — the “Open Courtyard” — which adopts the existing anonymous stock of houses as a foundation for the development of various public or semi-public programs. The concept of densification at the scale of a single street is further promoted through a study at the level of residential typology. By identifying the indigenous house types of Podgorica’s suburbs and using them as a basis for developing collective housing models, zones for the construction of higher-density buildings are designated. This also leads to an increase in the neighborhood’s population by approximately 20%. The simultaneous development and promotion of new housing typologies and public programs in key suburban locations initiate a process of enriching the city’s periphery with new opportunities for community life.
