Analysis of the Eastern Sicilian Sea Port System

For every maritime country, it is important to have a well-functioning port system (PS). The larger it is, the more ports it comprises, the more complex the problems that can arise. The entire region, which presents the gravitational hinterland of these ports, depends on the functioning of the PS. This study conducts an analysis of the Eastern Sicilian Sea Port System, following the recent annexation of the Pozzallo port to the existing system. Thus, this paper analyzes the current performance of individual ports, in order to obtain an overall vision of the new structure of the port system. The methodology is primarily based on the analysis of traffic volumes, the dynamics of ship movements, cargo handling and the related logistical operations in each of the three ports in recent years. The main objectives are to provide an insight into the changing patterns and trends and to assess potential challenges and opportunities for PS. The initial results show how the strategies of the Port System Authority of Eastern Sicily aim to enhance the specific characteristics and potential of each port, with the goal of optimizing and rationalizing the entire port system, that plays a crucial role in regional trade and connectivity.
