Abstract
To magistrsko delo obravnava protokol WebTransport kot potencialno rešitev za prenos večpredstavnostnih vsebin v realnem času prek protokola HTTP/3. Cilj naloge je bil preveriti njegovo praktično uporabnost pri pretočnem prenosu videa in zvoka ter ga primerjati z uveljavljenim protokolom WebRTC. Poseben poudarek je bil namenjen integraciji s spletnim aplikacijskim programskim vmesnikom WebCodecs, ki omogoča neposredno kodiranje in dekodiranje v brskalniku. V okviru naloge je bila razvita eksperimentalna aplikacija, ki podpira tako enosmerno kot dvosmerno komunikacijo z uporabo različnih prenosnih mehanizmov: WebTransport s tokovi, WebTransport z datagrami ter WebRTC z in brez uporabe WebCodecs. V nadzorovanem omrežnem okolju so bile izmerjene ključne metrike, kot so variacija zakasnitve, zakasnitev pri vzpostavitvi povezave, subjektivna ocena kakovosti izkušnje ter število prikazanih sličic na sekundo. Rezultati kažejo, da WebTransport omogoča bistveno hitrejšo vzpostavitev povezave v primerjavi z WebRTC. Izvedba z datagrami je dosegla bolj gladko in stabilno predvajanje, z nižjo variacijo zakasnitve in manjšim številom artefaktov. WebRTC ostaja robustnejša izbira v kompleksnih omrežjih in ponuja dodatne vgrajene funkcionalnosti, vendar WebTransport ob ustrezni implementaciji ponuja večjo fleksibilnost in natančnejši nadzor nad prenosom.

Title:Using the WebTransport standard for real-time communication
Abstract:
This master’s thesis explores WebTransport as a viable protocol for real-time media transmission over HTTP/3. The primary goal is to assess its practical applicability for streaming video and audio content and compare its performance to the established WebRTC protocol. Special attention is given to the integration with the WebCodecs API, which enables low-level encoding and decoding directly in the browser environment. An experimental application was developed to support both unidirectional and bidirectional communication using different transmission strategies: WebTransport via streams, WebTransport via datagrams, and WebRTC with and without WebCodecs. In a controlled local network environment, key performance metrics were measured, including jitter, connection setup time, subjective quality of experience and the number of rendered frames per second. The results show that WebTransport provides significantly faster connection setup compared to WebRTC. The datagram-based implementation achieved smoother playback with reduced jitter and fewer visual artifacts. While WebRTC remains a more robust option in complex network conditions, WebTransport - with proper implementation - offers greater flexibility and precise control over the transmission pipeline.
