Abstract

Title:
Architecture of communal living : conceptual study of spaces of a collective in residence and design proposition of a residential housing complex in Studenci, Maribor
Abstract:
Elements of spatial design are key in establishing an atmosphere of dwelling. The content of this thesis aims to encourage reflection on living in a home. Dwelling activities that take place in a domestic environment are put into question and evaluated in terms of whether these activities are undoubtedly private, or whether they can be performed in a communal context. When determining which activities are possible in a shared space, a new question arises: how does the space we know as individual change when it comes into use by a larger collective? Redefining the constellations of dwelling communities—most often biological families—adapting the functions of spaces, and redefining the number of users occupying a home opens up a new path of architectural design. By becoming aware of patterns of domestic living, we gain a new field of possibilities for the use of the elements of built space, and their impact on the lives of individual inhabitants and the communities they could form. The theoretical part of the thesis addresses the problem of housing accessibility for individuals and constellations of individuals who deviate from the established nuclear family on which most housing in Slovenia is based. The process of redefining dwelling spaces is grounded in a graphic tool that can evaluate individual architectural and urban elements based on their potential to create an individual or a collective atmosphere in space. The graphic tool is validated through case studies of historically existing residential communities, which are considered to have consciously transformed the space for the purpose of communal living. The practical part of the thesis presents three conceptual designs for dwellings, set in the context of a real site located in Maribor. Each part of the new neighborhood is designed according to the values of the potential inhabitants. The residential design should not be seen as final and unchangeable, but only as a suggestion for alternative use—one that is ultimately not decided by the architect, but built by community-forming inhabitants.
