Abstract
DOM SMO+MI!

Title:
SMO+MI! HOUSING: project study of admission and accomodation of asylum seekers in Slovenia and conceptual design of sommunity for young adults and immigrants in the area of Jeranova single persons residence in Ljubljana
Abstract:
HOUSING SMO+MI! (Community for Young Adults and Migrants) explores the issue of asylum seekers’ accommodation in Slovenia. The existing asylum system is rigid and segregating, thereby intruding into individuals’ privacy and freedom, and hindering the process of integration. A detailed analysis of reception and accommodation of asylum seekers shows that successful integration requires a departure from institutional housing and the introduction of a new typology. The thesis engages with the concept of integration and inclusion, examines inclusive design of cities and living environments, and sets principles for shaping new accommodation facilities. On a degraded state-owned plot within a dense residential neighborhood, it proposes the renovation of an existing building and its upgrade into a community. The design of the project is based on creating quality living spaces and a supporting program that encourages active participation and integration. The project distances itself from restrictive legislative frameworks and, with the help of good practice examples from abroad, proposes a new solution.
