Abstract

Title:Ecologisation of architectural practice
Abstract:
Present thesis follows a transdisciplinary concept of ecology that goes beyond its classical understanding as a narrowly defined scientific discipline and instead conceives it as a weave of three dimensions – environmental, mental, and social ecology. The thesis uses ecology as a conceptual tool for the critique and transformation of architectural practice, referring to this as the ecologization of architecture. The essence of this approach is not the development of a new design method, but rather a shift in the understanding of the relationship between ecology and architecture – one that situates architectural production within a complex ecological interdependence with other factors and practices, contrary to the idea of space as a passive backdrop, treats it as an active, participatory force that manages matter through spatial configurations. The emphasis is on the active reshaping of the material environment drawing on two central Deleuzian concepts of folding and becoming, through which ecological architecture is defined as a dynamic and processual system. The thesis develops the concept of the ecologization as a political, ethical, and environmental necessity that demands a radical transformation of architecture, opposes anthropocentric and market driven paradigms, and understands architecture also as a political tool for reshaping the relationships between the built environment, natural world, and society.
