Abstract

Title:Conceptual design of biodiversity centre in Bizeljsko
Abstract:
Human-made landscapes, such as vineyards, orchards, fields, and meadows, play a significant role in preserving biodiversity. These areas have the potential to support more diverse ecosystems than those that develop spontaneously without human intervention. As a catalyst for change in the management and cultivation of these spaces, the project envisions a biodiversity centre that integrates production, educational, research, service, and social programs. By establishing a new walking path in Bizeljsko and activating degraded sites—such as an abandoned sand quarry, a disused cooperative centre, and an unfinished structure opposite it, the project aims to highlight the importance of biodiversity-rich spaces in rural environments, while emphasizing native and traditional plant varieties recognized as key factors in biodiversity conservation. In the study area, previously unused lands that were once used for cultivation are restored to their original purpose, while simultaneously becoming a reference example of biodiversity-friendly cultivation. The fruit and vegetables produced at the centre are processed into products sold in the on-site store, and the entire process can be observed for educational purposes. Easier access to native seedlings and seeds is provided through a tree nursery and seed bank, all interconnected by a patisserie, tasting space, and cultural hall.
