Abstract
The thesis examines how communicative activities are incorporated into English language teaching (ELT) coursebooks used in Slovenian primary and secondary schools. The theoretical part of this paper describes the key principles of communicative competence and communicative language teaching (CLT), and compares the theoretical framework to the Slovenian national curricula. The empirical part analyses separate units in Messages 4 and Headway: Upper Intermediate using a checklist based on Harmer and Prodromou’s criteria for communicative activities. The results show that there is a significant difference between the two coursebooks as secondary-level materials include more communicative tasks while primary-level materials largely focus on grammar and vocabulary. This suggests that coursebooks, especially at lower levels, do not fully support the communicative goals set by national curricula.

Title:Analiza sporazumevalnih dejavnosti v učbenikih za poučevanje angleščine v osnovnih in srednjih šolah v Sloveniji
Abstract:
Magistrsko delo preučuje prisotnost sporazumevalnih dejavnosti v učbenikih za pouk angleškega jezika v osnovnih in srednjih šolah v Sloveniji. Teoretični del opiše glavne značilnosti sporazumevalnih zmožnosti in komunikacijskega pristopa in se naveže na vsebino učnih načrtov za angleščino v osnovni šoli in v gimnaziji. V empiričnem delu je, s pomočjo kriterijev, temelječih na merilih, ki sta jih oblikovala Harmer in Prodromou, podana analiza vsebine izbranih enot v učbenikih Messages 4 in Headway: Upper Intermediate. Iz rezultatov analize je razvidna občutna razlika med gimnazijskim gradivom, v katerega je vključenih več sporazumevalnih dejavnosti, in osnovnošolskim gradivom, čigar vsebina temelji na nadzorovanih vajah, usmerjenih v slovnico in besedišče. Iz pridobljenih podatkov raziskave izhaja, da učbeniki, predvsem na nižji izobraževalni ravni, nekoliko pomanjkljivo sledijo ciljem sporazumevalnih jezikovnih zmožnosti, ki so zapisani v učnih načrtih.
