Abstract
V japonskih delih se značilnosti in lastnosti likov večkrat prikažejo z uporabo določenih jezikovnih posebnosti, tj. specifičnim načinom govora yakuwarigo (jezik vloge).

Title:
English translations of Kansai dialect in video games and anime
Abstract:
In Japanese works, the characteristics and traits of characters are often conveyed through specific linguistic features denoting a role, known as yakuwarigo (role language). These may include dialects, with the Kansai dialect being one of the most popular and recognizable. Role language carries various kinds of information about the characters who use it. However, this information can easily be lost in translation. This thesis analyzes the English translations of ten video games and ten anime in which characters speak the Kansai dialect in the original Japanese. The first aim of this thesis is to identify the methods of translation and the English speech styles employed, bearing in mind that English also features a range of dialects and speech styles associated with particular images or stereotypes. The personalities of these characters are also analyzed, as the second aim of the thesis is to determine whether these personalities influence the choice of English speech style in translation.
