The urban heat island (UHI) is a phenomenon in which temperatures in an urban area are higher
than in its surrounding rural environment. It occurs as a result of urbanization, dense built-up
areas, and a smaller proportion of vegetation. This thesis addresses the phenomenon of the
urban heat island in Ilirska Bistrica, which is an example of a smaller town. Before our research,
no concrete field measurements had been conducted; the phenomenon had previously been
demonstrated using satellite images. Using various measurement methods, I collected data
through stationary and route-based measurements, which I conducted in different parts of the
year 2025. The aim of the research was to confirm the existence of the UHI and to identify the
warmest areas within the town. I also examined the influence of anthropogenic sources on
higher urban temperatures and proposed measures to reduce them.
