Urban gardening that has long been widespread, has recently experienced a resurgence. People used to practice urban gardening due to the need for food, but today it has important social roles such as relaxation, socializing, spending free time, etc. In my thesis, I focus on the social role of urban gardening, in general and specifically in Korea. To do so, I have collected and interpreted existing scientific literature on urban gardening. In South Korea, the rapid urbanization of society led to a way of life that was very different from the rest of the world. Therefore, my thesis focuses on the historical development and characteristics of urban gardening and its social significance in modern South Korean society. Among these are the well-researched effects on health and the impact on sustainable urban development. In my thesis, I indicate the significant impact of urban gardening on community building, education, and political significance. In this sense, I find that urban gardening has become an important and inseparable part of South Korean society and culture.
