The master's thesis addresses domestic violence as a complex social problem and focuses on how it is dealt with in criminal law, with an emphasis on the prosecution and punishment of perpetrators of this criminal offense, as defined in the Slovenian Penal Code. Domestic violence has always been a pervasive social phenomenon that has long-term negative consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. The purpose of the thesis is to examine, based on final first-instance judgments of Slovenian courts, how they (in contemporary practice) sanction perpetrators of domestic violence, what types of judgments and penalties are most frequently imposed, which circumstances are most commonly considered, and whether there are significant differences between individual courts. The thesis contributes to the understanding of case law in this area and provides a basis for further reflection on the consistency, fairness, and effectiveness of punitive policy in cases of domestic violence.
