A Comparative Analysis of L1 Swedish and L1 Slovene Influence on L2 English Pronunciation: Common Consonant Errors

This MA thesis investigates the pronunciation of English consonants by Slovene and Swedish university students, with a focus on the production of individual phonemes. The study examines nine selected consonants: /v/, /w/, /r/, /ʒ/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /ð/, /θ/, and [ɫ]. A total of thirty participants (fifteen Slovene and fifteen Swedish) were recorded, completing both isolated word and contextual speech tasks. Their pronunciation was analysed both acoustically and auditorily. The results show that while Swedish students made more errors in the pronunciation of specific phonemes, particularly /ʒ/, /tʃ/, and /ð/, Slovene students more frequently combined features from General American (GA) and General British (GB), leading to mixed-accent outputs. The findings confirm earlier research on common consonantal difficulties among L2 English learners and highlight the role of external factors such as media exposure. This thesis contributes to a clearer understanding of how different L1 backgrounds influence English pronunciation and offers a basis for future pedagogical and linguistic research.

Abstract

Ta magistrska naloga raziskuje izgovorjavo angleških soglasnikov pri slovenskih in švedskih univerzitetnih študentih, s poudarkom na izgovorjavi posameznih fonemov. V študiji je obravnavanih devet izbranih soglasnikov: /v/, /w/, /r/, /ʒ/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /ð/, /θ/ in [ɫ]. Skupno je bilo posnetih trideset udeležencev (petnajst slovenskih in petnajst švedskih), ki so izvedli naloge z izgovorjavo besed v izolaciji in v kontekstu. Njihova izgovorjava je bila analizirana tako akustično kot slušno. Rezultati kažejo, da so švedski študenti naredili več napak pri izgovorjavi določenih fonemov, zlasti /ʒ/, /tʃ/ in /ð/, medtem ko so slovenski študenti pogosteje združevali značilnosti splošne ameriške angleščine (GA) in splošne britanske angleščine (GB), kar je povzročilo naglasne mešanice. Ugotovitve potrjujejo predhodne raziskave o pogostih soglasniških težavah pri govorcih angleščine kot tujega jezika ter poudarjajo vlogo zunanjih dejavnikov, kot je izpostavljenost medijem. Naloga prispeva k boljšemu razumevanju vpliva različnih maternih jezikov na izgovorjavo angleščine in ponuja osnovo za prihodnje pedagoške in jezikoslovne raziskave.
