Abstract

Title:
Verse through the cut: Translating poetry into moving images
Abstract:
In my thesis I explore the relationship between poetry and the moving image, within which I strive to answer the question of how the lyrical, often fragmented and subjective nature of poetry can be translated into the expressive language of experimental film and video. I stem from the understanding that creating video poetry is by its nature an act of composition – a continuous process of rearranging familiar elements into new contexts. In relation to this I also touch upon the question of originality in art, leaning on the writing of Roland Barthes, Rosalind Krauss and Susan Sontag. I provide a few examples of visual arts interpreting poetry and of films and video works that do not follow the classic narrative logic, but rather follow a rythm of inner feelings and ambiguous meanings. The practical part of this thesis consists of an experimental video work made up of multiple short episodes, each inspired in its own way by a selection of poems written by Anja Novak. I present the conceptual development, the filming process and the post-production part of the project.
