This master's thesis discusses the technical and interpretive aspects of the Sonata in B minor S. 178 by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and provides a detailed analysis of these aspects. The analysis is conceived as a guide for pianists seeking musical and technical answers. First, the aim and reasons for choosing this topic are presented, followed by a focus on Franz Liszt and his sonata. The emphasis of the thesis will be on analyzing piano technique, recurring patterns, thematic development, and other technical aspects that make performing this sonata exceptionally challenging. The goal is to raise awareness of technical issues and find easier solutions in the practice process. Additionally, the philosophical dimension and emotional depth of the piece will be explored, which significantly shape the interpretation and demand a personal touch from each performer. The study is theoretical and organized into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the life path and significance of Franz Liszt’s works, his innovativeness, and his impact on the music of his time. An introduction to the sonata itself is provided, along with historical facts and a bit more about its form. Significant recordings and performances are also mentioned. The second chapter focuses on the technical aspects and difficulties encountered in mastering this masterpiece from the later period of the composer’s creative output. The most important technical methods used throughout the composition are examined, explained, and grouped. The third part is dedicated to exploring the emotional and dramatic aspects of the sonata and analyzing its monothematic structure, which is key to creating a complete picture and understanding of the work. This analysis aims to provide insight into the challenges and complexity of performing and mastering this, it can be freely said, peak achievement of Liszt’s piano output. The Sonata in B minor is one of the central works for piano of the 19th century, both in terms of its significance and monumentality, as well as its innovative musical and technical methods. This thesis not only provides an analysis of the Sonata in B minor but also sheds light on Liszt’s immense influence on the development of piano playing and music in general, thereby confirming his status as one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. All these topics are addressed in this master’s study.
