Introduction: Alcohol addiction is a chronic disease that affects brain function and leads to uncontrolled behavior. It not only has a negative impact on health but also on relationships, daily functioning, and the individual's occupations. Although occupational therapy usually considers occupations to be beneficial for health, some can be harmful and have a dark side. Purpose: The goal of this thesis is to explore alcohol addiction as an example of the dark side of occupation. The purpose of this thesis was to explore how alcohol dependence is presented in occupational therapy literature and how it affects other occupations in an individual's life. Methods: A scoping literature review was conducted. The literature search took place in March 2025 across three databases: CINAHL, PubMed, and Web of Science. The review included qualitative and quantitative studies, literature reviews and professional articles published in English, regardless of the year of publication. Studies focusing on alcohol addiction were included, while those addressing other forms of addiction were excluded. Results: In the final analysis, nine studies that met the required criteria were included. These consisted of five qualitative studies, two quantitative studies, one professional article and one systematic literature review. The thematic analysis of the articles revealed two main themes, which were further divided into five subthemes. Discussion and conclusion: Alcohol addiction can be understood as an occupation that provides daily structure, identity, and a sense of belonging, while at the same time causing long-term negative consequences for physical health, social functioning, and psychological functioning. The recovery process from addiction does not only involve stopping alcohol consumption but requires the development of new, meaningful, and health-promoting occupations that help an individual establish a new life routine and regain a sense of self-worth. A key part of this process is social inclusion, which provides a person with support and a sense of safety. Occupational therapy plays an important role in encouraging the reshaping of life habits, improving daily skills, and developing effective ways to cope with challenges, all of which contribute to sustained recovery.
