Modern types of romantic relationships are contemporary forms of romantic and sexual behaviours and experiences that are united by the absence of commitment to one person and the desire for a long-term relationship. Currently they are increasingly present, especially in emerging adulthood, when emerging adults face specific developmental tasks and challenges. This study examined modern types of romantic relationships and predictors of emerging adults' involvement in them. I hypothesised that male gender, emerging adults' semi-independent or independent living, higher relationship dismissal, higher permissiveness, instrumentality and approval of modern types, would predict more frequent involvement in modern types of romantic relationships. Furthermore, I expected that higher relationship desire and higher communion would predict less frequent involvement. Emerging adults aged between 18 and 29 (N = 510, 79% females) completed an online questionnaire and answered questions regarding modern types of romantic relationships and filled out the Brief Measure of Relationship Importance and the Brief Sexual Attitudes Scale. As expected, the results of the hierarchical linear regression showed that independent living and higher permissiveness in emerging adults significantly predicted more frequent involvement in modern types of romantic relationships, while higher relationship desire significantly predicted less frequent involvement. Contrary to hypotheses, results showed that higher communion predicted more frequent involvement in modern types of romantic relationships and that emerging adults engage in modern types of romantic relationships regardless of their relationship dismissal, instrumentality, approval of modern types and of their gender. This master thesis provides a first overview of several types of modern romantic and sexual relationships and gives insights into the current experiences and prevalence of modern types among emerging adults in Slovenia. It also deepens the understanding of the reasons for engaging in modern types of romantic relationships and is an important source of data for further research and professional education.
