Abstract

Title:Analysis of stormwater management measures in the case of an industrial zone : graduation thesis
Abstract:
Stormwater management measures cover a wide range of solutions designed to achieve neutral runoff from the contributing area. In the majority of built spaces, the soil infiltration capacity decreases due to the increase of impervious areas, which results in higher and more intense stormwater runoff. Such changed runoff dynamics usually represent a flood risk for the downstream areas, unless stormwater runoff control measures are implemented. Thus, to prevent the negative impacts of increased runoff from the urbanized area, we use measures that ensure neutral runoff from the affected area by reducing it to the original peak runoff of the natural terrain. The main objective of this thesis is to determine measures for stormwater management, calculate their dimensions and properties, and evaluate the impact of the selected measures in relation to the initial state of the area under consideration - the industrial zone in the municipality of Kočevje. We considered the total volume of stormwater, its infiltration in the area and the total runoff, without calculating the hydraulics of the sewerage system. We decided to implement a solution with detention ponds and evaluated the use of blue-green infrastructure (BGI) solutions, more precisely swales. In the dynamic hydrology-hydraulic water modelling software SWMM we created a model of the industrial zone and calculated the runoff from the area for certain model starting points. We loaded the model with a synthetic precipitation series and selected a critical rainfall event from the results, which served as a limit for the maximum allowed runoff from the area. Based on this limit, we evaluated the effectiveness of the applied stormwater drainage management solutions, which reduced the peak runoff below the peak runoff of the natural terrain.
