Introduction: Floods are becoming more frequent and intense, causing serious health consequences. During floods, individuals face a shortage of drinking water, electricity, and protective equipment, which makes it difficult to maintain personal hygiene. In August 2023, Slovenia was hit by the worst floods in the country's history, which, among other things, caused disruptions in personal hygiene for the affected population. Purpose: The study aimed to examine how individuals maintained personal hygiene during the August 2023 floods and to analyse media reporting on hygiene measures. Methods: Qualitative and quantitative research approaches were used. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eleven individuals who experienced the August 2023 floods in the most affected regions. A content analysis of news published between 3 and 9 August 2023 in RTVSLO.si, 24ur.com, Delo, Dnevnik and Večer was conducted. Results: The interviewees highlighted handwashing and disinfection, the use of protective gloves, oral hygiene, and showering as important aspects of personal hygiene during the floods. In the early days resources were limited, they used bottled and boiled water. Later, necessary supplies were provided by the rescue, relief, and support forces. The biggest obstacle to personal hygiene was the lack of drinking water. They reported health problems observed in themselves or others nearby. Knowledge of hygiene practices came from family upbringing, formal and informal education. During the floods, information was provided by local authorities, civil protection, and firefighters, and disseminated via the internet, social networks, and personal contacts. The interviewees emphasized the lack of instructions for personal hygiene. Media content analysis showed that hygiene instructions focused mainly on boiling drinking water. Discussion and conclusion: Despite difficult circumstances, interviewees tried to maintain hygienic habits to reduce health problems. They washed and disinfected their hands more frequently, wore gloves, practiced oral hygiene, and washed their bodies. The main obstacles were the lack of drinking water and timely, clear, and accessible information on hygiene measures. The media reported on personal hygiene guidelines, but to a limited extent. The study showed the need to educate the population on behaviour during floods and to establish more effective communication channels in emergencies.
