The master's thesis explores the influence of social media, particularly the social network X, on journalistic reporting of breaking news and places it in the context of ambient journalism, as a social condition in today's digital world, which implies a constant presence of information and a constant production of news. The thesis discusses how the continuous presence of information on social media is changing journalistic practices and how journalists and editors are dealing with challenges such as fact–checking and ensuring credibility. The aim of the master's thesis was to examine, through qualitative research, how 15 journalists and editors perceive ambient journalism and how they use information about breaking news obtained via the network X. In short semi–structured interviews, their experiences and ways of working shed light on the trends of ambient journalism and the challenges this type of journalism presents for credible reporting on breaking news. The results of the interview analysis show that the network X is a key tool for journalistic and editorial work, especially in the case of breaking news, while they also pointed out that fact–checking and ensuring credibility are among the key challenges. Journalists perceive information on the network X as signals, which they then additionally verify before including them in their reporting.
