Absenteeism is a growing negative social phenomenon that affects numerous social subsystems. It is determined by various factors related to the characteristics of work and the work environment. The professional work is divided into four sections. The theoretical part explains concepts such as absenteeism, presenteeism, health-related absenteeism and discusses the causes, factors and consequences of sick leave from work. Special emphasis is placed on the explanation of psychosocial risks, where the most common factors in the workplace and their health consequences such as stress, burnout and depression are highlighted. The conclusion of this section is intended to understand the connection between psychosocial risks and absenteeism. The work also focuses on the legislative framework that regulates sick leave in Slovenia and includes proposals from social partners for reducing growing absenteeism. The proposals stem from the finding that psychosocial risks in the workplace are the main cause of high absenteeism costs in Slovenia. The empirical part explains the impact of stress on the occurrence of objective medical conditions in six female employees.
