Abstract
This thesis presents a workflow for transforming static Building Information Models into interactive digital twins using Unreal Engine 5.5. The research addresses the fragmentation in facility management where building geometry, sensor data, and user interfaces exist in disconnected systems. Using the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy building at the University of Ljubljana, the implementation integrates IFC models with real-time IoT sensor data in both desktop and virtual reality environments. The system employs a three-tier navigation architecture connecting 2D floor plans with 3D exploration through mini-map, full-screen interface, and teleportation mechanisms. Environmental data from HOBO sensors and OpenWeather API provides real-time temperature, humidity, and CO2 monitoring within a spatial context. This research contributes a validated methodology for BIM-to-digital twin workflows, a novel navigation paradigm bridging 2D and 3D facility management, and empirical evidence that game engines provide viable platforms for professional architectural applications. The open-source approach using free tools democratizes digital twin technology, making it accessible to educational institutions and smaller organizations previously excluded by proprietary platform costs. The implementation establishes reusable patterns for future digital twin development while demonstrating that the convergence of BIM, IoT, and game engine technologies has reached sufficient maturity for practical facility management deployment.

Title:Od BIM-a do interaktivnega digitalnega dvojčka - delovni tok za integracijo virtualnih in fizičnih okolij : master thesis
Abstract:
Nalogo opisije delotok za pretvorbo statičnih informacijskih modelov zgradb (BIM) v interaktivne digitalne dvojčke z uporabo igralnega pogona Unreal Engine 5.5. Raziskava obravnava področje upravljanja stavb, kjer geometrija stavbe, podatki s senzorjev in uporabniški vmesniki obstajajo v ločenih, nepovezanih sistemih. Implementacija na primeru stavbe Fakultete za gradbeništvo in geodezijo Univerze v Ljubljani temelji na integraciji modelov IFC s podatki s senzorjev interneta stvari (IoT) v realnem času, ki se lahko uporablja na namiynih računalnikih in v okoljih navidezne resničnosti. Sistem uporablja trinivojsko navigacijsko arhitekturo, ki povezuje 2D-tlorise s 3D-pregled z zemljevidi, celozaslonskim vmesnikom in mehanizi za teleportacijo. Okoljski podatki, pridobljeni s senzorji HOBO in vmesnikom API OpenWeather, omogočajo spremljanje temperature, vlažnosti in koncentracije CO2 v realnem času znotraj prostorskega konteksta. Prispevki naloge obsegajo metodologijo za delotoke pri prehodu od BIM do digitalnega dvojčka, novo navigacijsko paradigmo, ki premošča 2D- in 3D-upravljanje stavb, ter implementacijo, ki dokayzje, da so igralni pogoni lahko praktično uporabne platforme za strokovne aplikacije. Odprtokodni pristop z uporabo brezplačnih orodij demokratizira tehnologijo digitalnih dvojčkov in omogoča dostop izobraževalnim ustanovam ter manjšim organizacijam, ki so bile prej izključene zaradi stroškov lastniških platform. Implementacija vzpostavlja ponovno uporabne vzorce za prihodnji razvoj digitalnih dvojčkov in hkrati dokazuje, da je konvergenca tehnologij BIM, interneta stvari in igralnih pogonov dosegla zadostno zrelost za praktično uporabo pri upravljanju stavb.
