Abstract
This thesis explores the possibility of teaching English spelling to secondary school students using the history of the English language. The thesis researches the history of the English language with a focus on the importance of correct spelling, the history of teaching spelling and strategies for teaching spelling. Based on an overview of spelling tasks in textbooks and two questionnaires examining teacher and secondary school student attitudes towards spelling, tasks for teaching spelling were created. These were tested on secondary school students who also provided some feedback through an additional questionnaire. The theoretical research and student and teacher attitudes prove that spelling is still valued as important. Students consider spelling tasks based on the history of English to be quite useful. The history of English is a teaching topic with much potential that goes beyond the field of spelling.

Title:Poučevanje črkovanja pri pouku angleščine v srednji šoli s pomočjo zgodovine angleščine
Abstract:
Ta magistrska naloga raziskuje možnost rabe zgodovine angleškega jezika za poučevanje črkovanja pri pouku angleščine v srednji šoli. Naloga raziskuje zgodovino angleščine s poudarkom na pomenu črkovanja, zgodovino poučevanja črkovanja ter sodobne strategije za in pristope k poučevanju črkovanja. Na podlagi pregleda nalog v učbenikih, ki razvijajo in utrjujejo črkovanje, in dveh vprašalnikov o tem, kakšen odnos imajo do črkovanja učitelji in srednješolci, smo ustvarili naloge za poučevanje črkovanja. Te naloge so srednješolci preizkusili in nato podali svoje mnenje v dodatnem anketnem vprašalniku. Tako raziskava teoretičnega gradiva kakor tudi mnenja učiteljev in dijakov dokazujejo, da je črkovanje še vedno pomembno. Dijaki s srednjih šol menijo, da so naloge črkovanja, osnovane na zgodovini angleščine, koristne. Zgodovina angleščine ima kot tema za poučevanje veliko potenciala, ki presega področje črkovanja.
