In my final thesis, I examine the formation of »Gran Colombia«, focusing on the political ideas of Simón Bolívar. The aim of the work is to present Bolívar’s political principles and his vision for establishing a new state as both a necessary condition for the successful liberation from Spanish rule and a key factor for its survival. Through an analysis of his most important political writings in connection with the events of the independence process, the thesis traces the path from his active involvement in the struggle against the monarchy, to the union achieved at the Congress of Angostura, and finally to the formal creation of the union with the adoption of the constitution at the Congress of Cúcuta in 1821. The paper also addresses the political instruments Bolívar envisioned for re-educating the populace to facilitate a smoother and more effective transition from monarchical to republican governance.
