Abstract
Metode dela: Diplomsko delo obsega pregled domače ter tuje strokovne in znanstvene literature s področja raka dojk, mastektomije in zunanjih prsnih protez. Kljub manjšemu nelagodju in potenju v toplejših mesecih pacientka poroča o visoki stopnji sprejetja in funkcionalnosti proteze.

Title:Prosthetic solutions after breast cancer surgery : diploma work
Abstract:
Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, and despite advances in diagnostics and treatment, it remains a global health issue. Surgical treatment often includes mastectomy, which has significant physical and psychosocial consequences. For women who choose not to undergo reconstruction, external breast prostheses provide a rehabilitation option that restores breast shape and positively influences body image, self- confidence, and quality of life. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to present prosthetic care options after unilateral mastectomy, with emphasis on external breast prostheses, and to examine their impact on the psychosocial, functional and physical adjustment of patients. It highlights the importance of proper prosthesis selection in improving the quality of life, body image, and general well-being while addressing individual needs of patients, the role of healthcare professionals and the value of a multidisciplinary approach in rehabilitation following mastectomy. Methods: The thesis is based on a review of domestic and international professional and scientific literature on breast cancer, mastectomy, and external breast prostheses, complemented by a case study of a patient after unilateral mastectomy without reconstruction. The study presents her experience with an external breast prosthesis. Results: The results show that external breast prostheses can significantly help maintain posture, body image, and psychological well-being. The case study confirmed that correct prosthesis selection, professional counseling, and support have a positive effect on satisfaction with a non-invasive prosthetic solution. Although the patient experienced minor discomfort during warmer months, she reported high acceptance and daily functionality. Discussion and conclusion: The use of external breast prostheses after mastectomy are an effective, safe, and psychologically acceptable alternative to reconstruction. The case study shows that proper prosthesis selection, together with professional and emotional support, greatly contributes to recovery. Individual decision- making based on personal values, experiences, and trust in the healthcare team plays an important role. Challenges such as discomfort and sweating suggest opportunities for material improvements and tailored solutions. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach including psychological support and counseling was also emphasized. External breast prostheses are thus not merely aesthetic aids but an important part of holistic rehabilitation, enabling women after mastectomy to achieve better physical well-being, self-image, and quality of life.
